The DuPont Challenge Science Essay Competition, open to students in grades 7–12, is taking applications until January 31, 2011. Students who submit a 1,000-word essay on a science-related topic will vie for a chance to win a $5,000 savings bond and an expense-paid trip to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Teachers who sponsor winning students receive cash grants and expense-paid trips to Kennedy Space Center and Disney World and to the 2012 NSTA National Conference on Science Education in Indianapolis, Indiana. Last year’s winners were invited to the White House to participate in the first annual White House Science Fair with President Obama.
