The Growth Mindset and Stereotype Threat
Tuesday, May 14
12:00 PM – 1:30 PM Eastern Time (90 minutes)

NAGC is pleased to present “The Growth Mindset and Stereotype Threat,” a FREE video webcast on Tuesday, May 14, 12:00 – 1:30 pm (Eastern). Moderated by NAGC Past President Ann Robinson and featuring Joshua Aronson, Associate Professor of Applied Psychology, New York University, this event was inspired by a project developed by the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented that resulted in a book collaboration with psychologists, cognitive neuroscientists and gifted education researchers from the NRC Center, NAGC, and the American Psychological Association. Malleable Minds: Translating Insights From Psychology and Neuroscience to Gifted Education shows us what current research in psychology and neuroscience means to developing talent.

Aronson is one of the most widely cited social scientists in the past decade. His research in minority student achievement offers a strong challenge to traditional genetic explanations of why these groups perform less well on tests of intelligence than their White counterparts, and why women trail men in hard math and science. Aronson's work seeks to understand and remediate race and gender gaps in educational achievement and standardized test performance. His studies have revealed that stereotype threat engenders a number of interesting psychological and physiological responses, many of which interfere with intellectual performance and academic motivation. A particular focus of his recent work is on creating scalable interventions that any teacher can use to improve the performance and learning of their students.

New National Science Standards Released

April 12, 2013
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) have been finalized and are now available online. The standards, which are the result of a 26-state collaboration over two years, identify science and engineering practices and content that all K-12 students should master to be fully prepared for college and careers. The NGSS were built on a vision for science education established by the Framework for K-12 Science Education, published by the National Academies of Science's National Research Council in 2011.

"The Next Generation Science Standards are going to pull together inquiry and practice, and recognize the role of engineering. Pulling together the cross-cutting concepts is going to be a challenge, but it's really effective pedagogy," said Ellen Ebert, Washington State's Director of Science for Teaching and Learning at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Recognizing that the NGSS will require instructional modifications for advanced and gifted learners in the classroom, volunteers at NAGC are developing a book with sample differentiated learning experiences that will be released at the NAGC Convention in Indianapolis, Nov. 7-10.

Empowering Teachers & Learners with Mobile Learning

Tuesday, April 16 at 4pm Eastern Time

REGISTER HERE for the webinar

So many school districts overlook the critical role that administration plays in the learning process. That's not the case in Oregon's Canby School District.

In our community's next webinar, Joe Morelock will share his vision for technology, teaching, and mobile learning. He'll discuss the 1:1 iPod touch mobility program that is currently for all Grade Three and Four students in the district, the multiple iPad 1:1 and flipped classroom projects, and what he did to ensure the programs support and empower Canby's teachers and learners every step of the way.

You'll hear about how this empowerment philosophy was applied to every facet of the program, including how their network was structured, how teachers manage devices, and how PD is delivered.

Join Joe on April 16th for an interactive session on strategies for empowering teachers and learners with mobile learning.

Arctic Sea Ice: The New Normal

April 4, 2013

Last September, sea ice in the Arctic Ocean shrank to its smallest extent on record. This frozen cover is also dramatically younger and thinner than it used to be. How does the satellite record reveal these changes? And what are the effects of sea ice loss both near and far?

Explore these issues and questions with experts on sea ice monitoring, polar science, and data visualization at a live Google Hangout on Air on Tuesday, April 9 from 4–5 PM EDT, hosted by the American Museum of Natural History’s Science Bulletins program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The Hangout will highlight a new data visualization, designed for informal education at museums and science centers, about the recent, radical trends in Arctic sea ice. The panel will also address ways to interpret the visualization for museum and educational audiences.

The Hangout will feature:
Dr. Ned Gardiner, data visualization specialist with the NOAA Climate Program Office
Dr. Mark Tschudi, Research Associate at the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Colorado–Boulder
Dr. Karen Frey, Assistant Professor of Geography at Clark University
