My mother is Polish/Irish from Greenpoint Brooklyn, and my father is
mestizo Filipino/Spanish from Cavite City in the Philippines, so my
sisters and I have a unique cultural background. Growing up, one of my
favorite holidays to celebrate was Easter. After attending mass in our
parish, we'd drive to my uncle's apartment in Greenpoint Brooklyn, a
neighborhood sometimes called "Little Poland" due to it's large Polish
community, where my aunt prepared a Polish feast. We all looked forward
to the traditional Polish dishes. There would be pierogies, little
triangle shaped dumplings stuffed with potatoes and onions; kielbasa,
sausage boiled and served with sauerkraut; and babka, a sweet yeast
cake.
