Red Planet: Read, Write, Explore!

A workshop for teachers and educators of 3^rd-5^th grade students

Saturday, August 24^th; 9am to 4pm

Mexican Consulate, 2401 W. 6th St., Los Angeles, CA 90057

The MAVEN mission—the next mission to the Red Planet—will study Mars’ climate and climate history. Mars was once a world with oceans, rivers, and lakes, but at some point in its history the atmosphere and flowing water disappeared. What happened is a mystery: How did the atmosphere escape, and how long did that take? MAVEN will launch in the fall of 2013 and arrive at Mars in 2014 to seek answers to such questions.

Join us for a one-day workshop on the MAVEN mission, and our accompanying program for grades 3-5, Red Planet: Read, Write Explore!

About the workshop and lessons: A suite of six standards-based lessons combines science, literacy, and art to help students understand planetary habitability and the MAVEN mission. Students learn about Mars science, planetary habitability, and future exploration. Students read, write, and listen to both fiction and non-fiction about Mars, conduct research, and share ideas through discussion. Accompanying the lessons are science experiments and demonstrations. The workshop, offered by the MAVEN education team, will introduce you to these lessons and concepts. The workshop will also have a session devoted to Spanish speaking ELL and ESL students. You will receive free classroom materials, including a copy of Dr. Jeffrey Bennett’s Max Goes to Mars.

Registration fee: $15.00 by check to the University of Colorado (includes continental breakfast and lunch)

NAGC is pleased to present “The Growth Mindset and Stereotype Threat,” a FREE video webcast on Tuesday, May 14, 12:00 – 1:30 pm (Eastern). Moderated by NAGC Past President Ann Robinson and featuring Joshua Aronson, Associate Professor of Applied Psychology, New York University, this event was inspired by a project developed by the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented that resulted in a book collaboration with psychologists, cognitive neuroscientists and gifted education researchers from the NRC Center, NAGC, and the American Psychological Association. Malleable Minds: Translating Insights From Psychology and Neuroscience to Gifted Education shows us what current research in psychology and neuroscience means to developing talent.

Aronson is one of the most widely cited social scientists in the past decade. His research in minority student achievement offers a strong challenge to traditional genetic explanations of why these groups perform less well on tests of intelligence than their White counterparts, and why women trail men in hard math and science. Aronson's work seeks to understand and remediate race and gender gaps in educational achievement and standardized test performance. His studies have revealed that stereotype threat engenders a number of interesting psychological and physiological responses, many of which interfere with intellectual performance and academic motivation. A particular focus of his recent work is on creating scalable interventions that any teacher can use to improve the performance and learning of their students.

New National Science Standards Released

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) have been finalized and are now available online. The standards, which are the result of a 26-state collaboration over two years, identify science and engineering practices and content that all K-12 students should master to be fully prepared for college and careers. The NGSS were built on a vision for science education established by the Framework for K-12 Science Education, published by the National Academies of Science's National Research Council in 2011.

"The Next Generation Science Standards are going to pull together inquiry and practice, and recognize the role of engineering. Pulling together the cross-cutting concepts is going to be a challenge, but it's really effective pedagogy," said Ellen Ebert, Washington State's Director of Science for Teaching and Learning at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Recognizing that the NGSS will require instructional modifications for advanced and gifted learners in the classroom, volunteers at NAGC are developing a book with sample differentiated learning experiences that will be released at the NAGC Convention in Indianapolis, Nov. 7-10.
